Abstract

1,208,744. Seaming non-metallic sheet material. PARNALL & SONS Ltd. 21 Feb., 1969 [2 Dec., 1967], No. 64939/67. Heading B5K. A hand tool for welding together thermoplastic materials, e.g. filled thermoplastic bags, comprises a pair of heating members 16 mounted on handles 11, 12 interconnected with each other for relative movement together of the members 16 in a clamping action under hand pressure and a control unit 23 mounted on the tool, connectable to a source of low voltage direct current and operable to regulate the current passed through heating elements incorporated in the members 16. The handles 11, 12 are pivotally connected by a pin 13 and are normally urged apart by a compression spring 18. The members 16, each comprising a tensioned strip of resistance metal, are mounted on support bars 14, 15 and the outer faces thereof are covered by a barrier material 17. A cable 22 is connected to a 12- volt vehicle accumulator. When the members 16 are brought together, the handle 12 operates a button 21 to close a two-way microswitch 20 on the handle 11 to supply current to the members 16. The control unit 23 includes a timing circuit to regulate the duration of the passage of current through the members 16. This duration may be altered by a multi-setting switch 25 and a lamp 26 indicates that current is being supplied to the members 16 which are connected by a flexible metal braid. An electrical circuit for the device is described, Fig. 2 (not shown).
