Abstract

1,208,419. Washing machines. HOTPOINT Ltd. 28 Feb., 1968 [6 Dec., 1966], No. 54565/66. Heading A4F. [Also in Division D1] An automatic washing machine comprises a container for clothes or the like with a heater, a drive motor, and an electric timing device operating the machine in a predetermined cycle and provided with manual selecting means for starting the programme at different points in the cycle to produce at least two programmes with shortened heating and washing periods, temperature sensitive means being provided for interrupting the cycle and the energization of the drive motor at certain points if the washing liquid temperature is below a predetermined value and maintaining the interruption until this temperature has been reached. The washing machine comprises a drum rotatable about a horizontal axis within a container mounted on springs and dampers in a cabinet. Wash, spin and timer motors A, B and TM are provided. Motor TM drives seven cams C 1 -C 5 (not shown) one step every two minutes and cams C 6 , C 7 (not shown) continuously at one revolution per minute. Cams (C 1 -C 5 ) control switches S 1 -S 5 having contacts 1-11 and cams (C 6 , C 7 ) operate switches S6, S7 in the circuits of the wash and spin motors A and B respectively. The wash motor A rotates the drum alternately in opposite directions at a low speed and spin motor B rotates it at high speed in one direction. A single two-speed motor may be used. The machine can only operate when the mains switch MS is closed and the door is closed to close door switch DS. The water level is selected by positioning switch S2 to select switch L or H according to whether a low or a high level for washing or rinsing is required and when contacts 1, 2 of switch S5 are closed the water valve E will be opened by the energization of winding W. When the selected level is reached switch L or H is moved to deenergize winding W and connect switches S1, S3, S4 in the circuit. Switch S1 can switch a thermostatically controlled switch T into series with motor TM so that, if switch T is open, motors TM and A are interrupted. Water heater D is controlled by switch S3. Spin motor B is controlled by switch S4 when switch S7 is open and switch EXT is closed and by switch S3 when switch S7 is closed and switch EXT is open. Switch EXT is operated by the user to introduce a short spin. The complete cycle comprises sixty steps, the first nine steps being a pre-wash after which the machine stops and the step at which the main wash is to start is selected. As shown, a selector knob is provided by which one of six programmes may be selected as marked on a circular dial but instead a linear scale with a pointer may be used. Switch S1 is operated at appropriate points to ensure that the appropriate water temperature has been reached.
