Abstract

1,208,322. Porous storage battery electrodes containing particulate binder material. TEXAS INSTRUMENTS Inc. 5 Feb., 1968 [28 Feb., 1967], No. 5701/68. Heading H1B. [Also in Division C3] In a porous storage battery electrode particles of electrichemically active material are bonded to each other and to the electrically conductive substrate by means of particles of binder material. Electrically conductive particles may also be present. The electrode may be made by mixing the particles, e.g. as a paste, spreading the mixture on the substrate, and heating the mixture to fuse the binder to the active particles and substrate. Suitable binders include P.T.F.E., polyethylene and vinyl polymers, in particles up to 100 microns diameter, and in amount up to 30 wt. per cent of the particle mixture. Suitable active materials include Cd, CdO, Zn, ZnO, Fe, Fe 2 O 3 , Ag, AgO, MnO 2 and #-Ni(OH) 3 . In examples a paste of CdO and P.T.F.E. with water, or of Ni(OH) 3 , carbonyl nickel, polyethylene and water, is-applied to Ni mesh strip taken from a reel, then the strip is dried, pressed and cut into electrodes. Similarly a paste of ZnO, Zn powder, polyethylene,-and a little HgO and surfactant is applied to Zn-plated Ni mesh. In a variation of the first procedure, the particle mixture is fed dry from a hopper and is held to the screen by textile strips, e.g. of non-woven polyamide felt, the whole then being pressed and heated. The fabric strip may be burnt off or peeled off or retained as a separator.
