Abstract

A fluid-flow meter has a rotor 11 with flat blades 20 in planes containing the axis of a shaft 40 and blades 21 in planes intersecting said axis at an angle less than 90 degrees, the blades 20 applying a restraining torque that swamps other restraining torques inherent in the meter due to for example friction at bearings 12, 13. Fluidflow can be in either direction and a fixed flowstraightener may be lodged between the blades 20, 21. Alternatively, the planes of the blades 20 are similar to those of the blades 21 but at a different angle. A rotor 22 with inclined blades may be provided on the upstream side of the rotor 11, a shroud ring 23 producing a braking effect due to the viscosity of the fluid and thereby regulating the angular velocity of the fluid approaching the rotor 11 to effect compensation for viscosity drag at the bearings. Hubs 15, 16 are supported by stator blades 17, 18.
