Abstract
1,207,858. Seed containers. NIPPON TENSAI SEITO K.K. 28 Nov., 1967 [28 Dec., 1966], No. 54212/67. Heading A1E. A seed tray comprises a block of adjacent rows of compartments for receiving a seed growing medium, the compartments being made of paper or the like so that after cultivation of the seeds into seedlings the portions of growing medium containing the seedlings can be withdrawn from the block as a continuous interconnected series. The partitions defining the compartments may be made of a paper which rots away under seedling cultivation conditions and if required alternate ends of succeeding rows may be made of such paper. The paste used for sticking the partitions is water-soluble or water-insoluble as required. In the first embodiment, Fig. 7, the block of compartments is made by laminating two layers of paper by strips of adhesive 2, 2<SP>1</SP>, folding the layered product as shown in Fig. 2, pulling out the product and expanding it into adjacent compartments and folding them into rows which are stuck by paste 211. The compartments are filled with earth containing seedlings and can be pulled out into a continuous series by a machine which separates the compartments for planting. In another embodiment, Fig. 9, flattened paper containers 11 are joined and stuck together in the pattern shown, before being expanded into a block of hexagonal compartments, Fig. 10. In another example, Fig. 12, the separate layers 21 are joined by partition forming strips and paste, some of the strips being of paper which rots under seedling cultivation conditions, Fig. 14. Instead of interconnecting the layers where they project at their ends, Fig. 12, to provide a connection between each row when the block is pulled out into a continuous length, the alternate ends of each row may comprise a strip of paper which rots, Fig. 16.
