Abstract

1,207,805. Vibration dampers; springs. SMITHS INDUSTRIES Ltd. 22 Dec., 1967 [30 Dec., 1966], No. 58261/66. Heading F2S. The rotary movement of a stepping motor, e.g. in a vehicle odometer, is damped by a spring 4 of the form shown which engages a rotating part 1 such as a brake drum attached to the motor's shaft. On starting the motor, static friction causes the spring's central portion 5 to move with the part 1 until slipping occurs, after which further movement is damped by dynamic friction. During the static friction phase the spring is deformed and on stopping the spring relaxes toward the undeformed state shown. This tends to prevent final stoppage at a position of zero torque; moreover (in contrast to the effect of a purely frictional damper) starting from a position of near-zero torque is not prevented.
