Abstract

1,207,669. Mould closing mechanism. EMHART CORP. 6 Nov., 1967 [29 Dec., 1966], No. 50314/67. Heading C1M. In a glassware forming machine (e.g. a Hartford I.S. type) having partible mould sections 10a, 10b mounted on mould holder arms 12, 14 which are pivotally supported on a common upright hinge pin 32 fixed at its lower end in the machine frame, a pair of rock shafts 24, 26 rotatably supported in the frame and adapted to be rotated through a predetermined angular displacement in timed relation with other components of the machine. 'and a pair of toggle links 34, 36 connecting the rock shafts 24, 26 to the mould holder arms 12, 14 for opening and closing movement of the mould sections in response to angular movement of the rock shafts, there is provided an upright support post 72 fixed in said machine frame adjacent said hinge pin 32, a tie bar 76 having one end connected to said support post 72 and an opposite end connected to the upper end portion of the hinge pin 32 to prevent hinge pin deflection, and a pair of fluid motors 100, 102 each of which has a fixed part mounted on the machine frame and a movable part 110 adapted to forcibly engage respective knee portions of each of said toggle links 24 or 36 to increase the closing force on the mould sections. The tie bar is provided to pre-stress the hinge-pin so that in operation of the mould closing device the hinge pin does not move out of its vertical position. The tie bar 76 is releasably connected to the support post 92, by a winged nut 96 a key 88 having a bifurcated end (Fig. 4, not shown) extending transverse to the direction of pre-load stress. The opposite end has an opening fitted with an eccentric bushing which fits eccentrically over post 32. By clamping the tie-bar with nut 96 and rotating the eccentric bushing the desired amount of pre-stress is obtained. The tie bar is slotted on diametrically opposed sides of the bush opening and is locked through the agency of a screw and a pin. The fluid motors 100, 102 which are operated through the machine timer have a common valve 118. Air passing into this valve raises a gravity-biased element 126 to close off an exhaust vent 122 so that the air passes through conduits into the cylinders of the motors and actuates the pistons 108. The outer ends of the pistonrods 110 contact cam plates 112 fitted on the knee portions of the toggle links and thus apply the additional force to ensure closure of the mould halves. When the air supply to the motors is cut off the element 126 drops to cover the air feed passage opening the exhaust vent 122. The pistons are retracted by springs 121.
