Abstract
1,207,543. Seals. GENERAL MOTORS CORP. 5 March, 1968, No. 10536/68. Heading F2B. [Also in Division F1] A seal member 28 for a gas turbine labyrinth packing comprises two or more perforated metal laminµ bonded together with the perforations overlapping to form passages for flow of fluid. As shown, three perforated sheet metal laminµ are employed and cooling air is fed to a space 35 above the packing through hollow nozzle vanes 9 and holes 31 in the inner shroud 18. The cooling air is then metered through the passages in the seal member 28 and into the gap between the seal member and a labyrinth member 17. The seal member 28 may be made by photo-etching and diffusion bonding and, if desired, the passages may be calibrated or provided only towards the high pressure edge of the packing. The cooling air may also serve as a barrier against the passage of gas through the packing.
