Abstract

1,207,460. Breaking; shearing; forging; annular tool heads. T. SAITO, M. SAITO, M. SAITO and H. SAITO. 21 May, 1968 [1 June, 19671, No. 25115/68. Headings B3E, B3H, B3T and B3W. Steel bar a is severed by forming a V-section groove b in its circumferential surface, and pressing a severing tool 33 having a sharp cutting edge of V cross-section into the groove whilst the bar is supported by two members disposed one on each side of the groove. The groove may be formed in a round section bar a by cutting wheels 14 carried by levers 11 pivotally mounted on a rotary member 4, the bar being restrained from moving with the member 4. A ring cam 8 has three grooves each associated with respective rollers 13 on levers 11. When the ring cam 8 is rotated in the same direction, i.e. clockwise as seen in Fig. 1, as the rotary member 4 but at a slightly greater speed, the rollers are forced along cam surfaces 17 and the cutting wheels are forced into the bar. Cutting bits 60, Fig. 3, may be substituted for the cutting wheels. The grooved bar is clamped against support rollers 26 by hydraulicallyactuated clamps 27. The rollers are journalled in carriages 25 running on rollers 24. An hydraulically-operated tool 33 with an arcuate cutting edge of V-shaped in cross-section is forced into the groove. The carriages 25 move apart during the severing operation. Alternative support means comprise blocks (61) (Fig. 7, not shown) slidably mounted on a base (23) and urged towards each other by springs (62), the upper surface of the blocks adjacent each other being cut away to form rounded faces. In an alternative embodiment of the invention (Figs. 17-20, not shown) the severing tool 33, and a similar tool (64) opposed to it, are used to form diametrically opposed grooves in a round section bar, the bar being rotated through 90 degrees and grooved again to complete the circumferential groove. The bar is then supported on the means described with reference to Fig. 7 and the severing tool 33 is used alone to sever the bar. An alternative wheel cutter device for grooving square-section bars (Figs. 15 to 16, not shown) comprises a C-frame (55) supporting opposed rotary bodies (56), each carrying four equispaced wheels (63), two opposed faces of the bar being grooved by feeding the bar between the rotary bodies or feeding the C-frame relatively to a stationary bar. Cutting bits may replace the discs (63).
