Abstract

1,207,307. Alternators. ROTAX Ltd. 24 Jan., 1968 [26 Oct., 1966], No. 48030/66. Heading H2A. Laminations of thicker section are provided at the ends of the rotor poles so that greater support for the rivets securing the end winding support members is obtained. A high-speed alternator has a casing 100 surrounding a laminated annular stator core 101 which has skewed slots for the output winding, where the slots are only adapted to receive wedges 109 at spaced-apart positions along the stator. The stator laminations are secured together 'end ,to end plates (103) by axial welds on the outer periphery. A laminated rotor core 18 is mounted on hollow shaft 11 and axially secured by screw 23. The rotor laminations have salient poles 19 and are secured together by rivets 22. A pole-face damping winding comprises conductors 24, 25 which are shortcircuited at the axial ends of the poles by being brazed to conductive plates 26, 27. Windings 28, of copper strip, surround each polepiece and are secured by wedge 30 against the underside of the pole-face. At the axial ends of the rotor core, L-shaped support members 29 are provided end secured by rivets 31, 32. In a modification the conductive plates are eliminated by making the end laminations thicker and conductive, either by using a copper-beryllium alloy or by plating a ferrous lamination with copper or silver. Excitation.-An exciter machine is mounted on the end of hollow shaft 11 and has two similar output winlings 33 each connected through a bridge rectifier circuit to the alternator field winding 28. The exciter field winding 60 is energized from the controlled output of permanent magnet alternator 62, mounted on the hollow shaft extension 15. The bridge rectifiers use oppositely connected pairs of semi-conductor diodes 40 mounted on axially extending arms 36 of heat sink assembly 35. Connector plates 70 are connected to the individual phases of the two 3-phase windings 33 through terminals 71 and the D.C. output of the rectifier bridges is taken to terminals 75, 76. Cooling fluid is drawn through extension 15 and chamber 16 and passes through outwardly directed passages 17 to cool the rectifier Assembly.
