A refrigerated display cabinet includes a first evaporator 45, 46, 47, a second evaporator 48 operating at a lower temperature than the first, and fans 52 for passing air sequentially over the first and second evaporators, the evaporators forming parts of separate refrigerating circuits. The first circuit employs CF 2 Cl 2 as refrigerant and the second CHF 2 Cl. The cooled air leaving the evaporators passes through a rear passage 68, which contains a plurality of deflectors arranged in a fan-like manner (Fig. 3, not shown), and then between louvres 65-67 which divide the divergent air streams into a plurality of substantially horizontal layers. The air passes over and into a storage area 69, then through an outlet 75 and a return duct 76 to the fan inlets; two fans, separated by a partition wall, are provided. The cabinet is opentopped and the front and rear walls have respective projections 57, 58 at their upper ends; projection 57 has two inclined surfaces 107, 108 and it is stated that the line of intersection 106 therebetween is arranged at the point of maximum temperature difference between adjacent air layers. The evaporators rest on a base member 39 formed with a drainage channel 40 and a groove 41 containing respective heating elements 43, 44, further heaters 50 being provided in the fin structure of the evaporators. A defrosting control thermostat 55 is provided adjacent the evaporators and together with a storage temperature control thermostat, the heating elements, and the compressor and fan motors is included in an electrical control circuit (Fig. 5, not shown) which includes a time delay thermal relay; the latter ensures that at startup both compressors are not simultaneously switched on. Defrost water from the drainage channel passes to a pan heated by one of the refrigeration circuits for evaporation. The condensing units of the two circuits are disposed at opposite ends of the cabinet beneath the cabinet beneath the storage space 69 which is of greater longitudinal extent than the chamber 38 which houses the evaporators and fans.
