A method of manufacturing a non-woven fabric comprises applying fibrous non-woven web to one or both faces of a stitch-bonded fabric consisting of or containing fusing thermoplastic fibres, attaching the web to the stitchbonded fabric by needle punching on one or both faces of the multilayer fabric, and subjecting the needlepunched fabric to heat treatment in at least selected areas sufficient to cause at least some of the thermoplastic fibres to melt. A non-woven web may be applied to each surface of the stitchbonded fabric, the needlepunching being effected after the application of each or both webs. The stitch bonded fabric consists of a web of fibres bound together by stitching with yarns or threads. The web of this fabric may include, as the thermoplastic fibres, fibres of vinyl chloride-acrylonitrile copolymer, polyethylene or polypropylene, which may be blended with non-thermoplastic fibres such as cotton or thermoplastic fibres with a higher melting point such as viscose rayon, nylon, polyester or polyacrylonitrile fibres. The stitching yarns or threads may be of cotton, viscose rayon, polyamide or polyester fibres, and are preferably stitched in a combined chain stitch and tricot stitch pattern. The fibrous non-woven web (or webs) may consist of cotton, regenerated cellulose, nylon, polyester, or polyacrylonitrile fibres or blends of two or more such fibres. The non-woven webs, and the web of fibres of the stitchbonded web may be formed by air-laying, carding, or crosslaying optionally with needlepunching, or garnetting, and the non-woven webs may include a bonding agent. The heat treatment may be effected without pressure, e.g. in an oven or by infra-red radiation, or in a heated platen press, the pressure being exerted overall or only in selected areas. The press may include a wire gauze to emboss the fabric. The surface of the finished fabric may be brushed or raised. The fabrics may be used as blankets, filters, or apparel, and are heat insulating.
