Abstract
1,206,866. Phenazine derivatives. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 29 April, 1969 [12 June, 1968], No. 27959/68. Heading C2C. [Also in Division A5] Novel phenazine derivatives of Formula I and II wherein X is halogen, n is 1, 2 or 3 and the dotted bonds α and # represent alternative positions for a double bond, are prepared as follows: (a) for compounds of Formula I, by (i) dealkylating a compound of Formula III. wherein R is alkyl, by treatment with a base, or (ii) reducing a compound of Formula II; (b) for compounds of Formula II, by (i) oxidizing a compound of Formula I or III, or (ii) simultaneously oxidizing and halogenating a 1- alkoxyphenazine of Formula III in which n is 0, 1 or 2, preferably by the use of a mixture of a hydrohalic acid and an oxidizing agent in which the oxidizing agent is present in excess of that needed for halogenation alone. 1 - Alkoxy - halophenazines of Formula III are prepared by halogenating a 1-alkoxyphenazine of Formula III in which n is 0, 1 or 2. 1-Methoxy-2-chlorophenazine is also prepared by reacting 2-nitrophenazine with sodium hypochlorite and methanol.
