Pipetting apparatus comprises a carriage for supporting a plurality of receptacles, at least one nozzle, means for producing relative movement between the nozzle or nozzles and the carriage, a plurality of liquid extraction and dispensing units each including at least one liquid volume measuring means and a changeover valve, each unit being easily insertable into the apparatus so as to be in operative relationship with a drive mechanism arranged for operating the or each measuring means and the valve of that unit, and each unit being easily replaceable by one of the other units for a change of programme. The operation of the apparatus is as disclosed in Specification 1,205,751.
