Abstract
1,205,542. Diphenyl terephthalate. CHEMISCHE WERKE WITTEN G.m.b.H. 17 Jan., 1969 [31 Jan., 1968], No. 599/69. Addition to 1,009,454. Heading C2C. Diphenyl terephthalate is obtained by a process which includes the steps of heating an alkyl (C 1-6 ) ester of terephthalic acid with at least an equivalent quantity of phenyl acetate in the presence of from 1 to 5% by weight of activated carbon to a temperature above 150‹ C. in an inert atmosphere, only then adding a Ti transesterification catalyst, removing the liberated alkyl (C 1-6 ) acetate from the reaction mixture, stirring the hot product so obtained into a relatively high boiling aromatic hydrocarbon under an inert gas, filtering off the activated carbon and crystallizing the product from the filtrate. An example is given which illustrates this process.
