In a machine tool such as a lathe, a tool changer is provided for selecting a tool from a magazine 9 and locating it in a tool station on the lathe and vice versa, simultaneously, the tool changer comprising two arms 15, 16 pivotable about and displaceable along an axis 19, the arms simultaneously pivoting in opposite directions during the tool changing operation and then moving along the axis to effect the removal and location of tools 20 and 98 in the magazine and tool station respectively. The arms are pivotable in axially spaced planes to permit simultaneous movement and avoid interference and are actuated from a drive motor through gears 79-88 and a Maltese cross mechanism 75. The axial movement of the arms 15, 16 is effected by fluid pressure units 52 and 61 respectively whereby the respective tools 20 and 98 are aligned with the magazine and tool station. The arms 15, 16 are provided with clamping jaws 17a, 17b and 18a, 18b, respectively, which simultaneously engage and clamp the tools 20, 98, the jaws being actuated by fluid pressure and spring means via levers 29 and 30. In eases where the machine is automatically controlled, a code and reader device 21 is provided, whereby the required tool is selected by traversing the magazine 9 along a frame 10, 12 until the required tool is in alignment with the reader 21 whereat the tool changing operation is initiated.
