[Also in Division F2] A control apparatus for a gas water heater comprises, in a housing 1, a diaphragm 23, which moves only when water flows into the heater, connected to a rod 24 and a plate 26 and urged against movement by a spring 25 between the plate 26 and housing 1, and a lever 22 pivoted on the housing at 27 has one end contacting plate 26 and the other end contacting the shaft 21 of an outlet valve closure member 20 which controls the gas flow to the main burner and is biased towards its open position by a spring 28, the lever thus being unable to rotate and permit valve 20 to open unless water flows into the heater. The initial gas flow to a pilot light (not shown) from a chamber 6 in the housing is brought about by manual depression of the knob 17 of a shaft 16 against a spring 18 to open a gas inlet valve closure member 12 carried on an aligned shaft 15 against the action of a spring 14, and the shaft 16 carries a perpendicular arm 35 having, e.g. a retractable wheel or ball, or flexible part 37, which engages the lever 22 to maintain valve 20 closed when shaft 16 is depressed in case the water is switched on accidentally. Simultaneously, a leg 36 on shaft 16 engages and depresses, via a leg of a rotatable pawl 36, an armature 30 slidable in an electromagnet 29 operated by a device sensitive to the pilot flame, e.g. a thermocouple. On release of knob 17, part 37 is retracted to permit operation of valve 20 and the shaft 15 has a slot 38 which engages the other leg of pawl 33 to prevent closure of valve 12. Should the pilot light go out, armature 30 is released and a spring 32 urges it against the pawl to release shaft 15 and close valve 12. The knob 17 may be rotated when in its outer position to lock it against inward movement and such rotation may also cause a limb secured to shaft 16 to contact the pawl 33 and disengage it from the slot 38. A gas regulator 8-11 includes a loading weight 10.
