In a xerographic copier (2) Fig. 1 (not shown) a logic control system comprises storage means for selectively storing the number of desired copies of an original document, first and second detectors sensing record sheets and copies respectively as they enter and leave the transport path, and a counter coupled to the storage means and the detectors for registering a net count. As shown in Fig.3, the desired number of copies is stored, via a manual keyboard 12 on a control panel (10) Fig.2 (not shown) and a digital to binary encoder 14, in a copy memory 16. Record sheets from a supply bin 28 are counted by a counter 52 on entering the transport path 30, are sensed by mechanical fingers 34 along the path, and completed copies are counted by counter 54 at the path exit, prior to sorting at 4. When the number of sheets entering equals the number stored in memory 16 (i) a count in one direction is registered via coincidence detector 56 in a reversible counter 60, (ii) a new original is advanced to the exposure position and (iii) counter 52 is reset to zero. When the number of completed copies equals the number stored in memory 16 a count in the opposite direction is entered in counter 60. If a jam occurs, a signal from jam detector 36 trips an AND gate 48, the number in counter 60 is converted at 68 to digital form and displayed at 20, and the machine is stopped automatically. The damaged record sheets are removed, and the originals are back spaced by the number indicated at 20. A signal form jam restart 64, via an AND gate 50 transfers via circuit 66, the number stored at counter 54 to counter 52 and the cycle is restarted.
