120,464. Scoble, W. A., and Rogers, F. E. Nov. 26, 1917. Sighting levels and clinometers.-Relates to hand instruments of the general type of depression range-finder, and comprises a sighting-instrument with attached spirit-level, so arranged that the cotangent of the angle of depression from the object is read directly, through the agency of a mirror mounted on the frame of the instrument, according to the position of the bubble with reference to a graduated scale upon or adjacent to the bubble tube, whilst the observer sights the object, the observation and reading being independent of the manual adjustment of any moving parts. Folding handles H are secured to the main tube carrying the backsight S<1>, foresight S<2>, mirror M, and curved graduated liquid level B. The scale figures are preferably reversed for reading in the mirror, which, in common with the sights, may be folded upon the tube. The product of the altitude of the observer, measured, e.g., by an altimeter, and the reading by the instrument is the horizontal range.
