Abstract

Sodium tetrolate is prepared by contacting sodium methylacetylide with carbon dioxide in the presence of a tertiary amine. The sodium acetylide may be prepared by contacting methylacetylene with sodium metal in an inert solvent, e.g. a hydrocarbon such as xylene, in the presence of a tertiary amine. Aliphatic, aromatic and heterocyclic tertiary amines are listed and triethylamine and N,N-dimethylaniline are preferred.
