1,203,903. Making tubes. CEMENTIFERA ITALIANA FIBRONIT S.p.A. 27 Jan., 1969, No. 4500/69. Heading F2P. A method of manufacturing tubes comprises the steps of forming from an aqueous slurry of a fibrous material a sheet 7 thereof, dewatering the sheet 7 on a permeable support 4, winding the sheet 7 on a mandrel 8 to form a tube 9 and continuing the winding in one or more localized areas only to form a local increase in the outside diameter of the tube. Sockets may be formed, with or without a sealing ring groove, in the increased diameter portions by a machining operation (Fig. 7, not shown). The sockets may be formed, however, by placing sleeves on the mandrel after the manufacture of the basic tube 9 at the position of the to be formed sockets (Fig. 6, not shown). The windings at the localized areas may be carried out in an installation to which the initially wound tube 9 is immediately moved, the installation comprising two winding assemblies (Figs. 5, 6, not shown). Alternatively, as shown, a gate 13 having sidewalls 14 (15, Fig. 1, not shown) is lowered by pneumatic or hydraulic actuation into the sheet 7 to prevent a central area of the sheet from forming. A spigot and socket tube is formed from the manufactured tube by a cutting process.
