Abstract
1,203,576. Curing polymers of episulphides. DUNLOP CO. Ltd. (S. Adamek). 24 Oct., 1967 [27 Oct., 1966], No. 48156/66. Heading C3R. Episulphide polymers, having at least two reactive terminal groups at least one of which is thiol, are cured by contacting with a compound containing at least two aziridinyl groups. Specified curing agents are phenyl - bis[(2 - methyl)aziridinyl] phosphine oxide and tris[1 - (2 - methyl)aziridinyl] phosphine oxide and sulphide. The episulphide polymer may be prepared as described in Specification 1,109,164. A plasticizer may be incorporated, e.g. hydroxyquinoline, a polyepisulphide having a molecular weight not greater than 2000, other polymeric sulphur-containing plasticizers, aromatic hydrocarbons and formaldehyde-hydrogen sulphide addition products. Fillers and additives such as carbon black, clays, calcium carbonate, Hi-Sil (registered Trade Mark) and stearic acid may also be added. The amount of aziridinyl compound is usually from 0.5 to 15 parts by weight per 100 of the polymer. The examples describe the curing of polypropylene sulphides having molecular weights ranging up to 26000 and of a copolymer of propylene sulphide and ethylene sulphide of molecular weight 13000. The cured polymers are useful as sealants, caulking compounds, gaskets and adhesives. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 1,068,952 and 1,125,566.
