[Also in Division A5] The compounds where R 1 -R 4 are H, alkyl, OH, alkoxy, nitro, halogen, pseudo-halogen, subs. alkyl, carboxy, carboxy ester, carboxyamide, N-subs. carboxyamide, N-disub. carboxyamide, amino, mono- or di-subs. amino, thiol, alkylthiol and oxygenated derivs. thereof, sulphonic acid, esters, amides and subs. amides thereof or a heterocyclic ring system attached to the benzimidazole system through a N atom. R 5 is H, a salt forming gp., alky], subs. alkyl, alkenyl, subs. alkenyl, alkyny], subs. alkynyl, -COR<SP>6</SP>. - COOR<SP>7</SP>, -SOOR<SP>8</SP>, where R 6 -R 8 are alkyl, subs. alkyl, aryl, subs. aryl, aralkyl, subs. aralkyl, alkenyl subs. alkenyl, alkynyl, subs. alkynyl, are mado by forming the 2-trihalomethyl benzimidazole by reacting the corresponding subs. o-phenylene diamine with trihaloacetic acid, salt or derivative thereof and subsequently fluorinating the 2-trihalomethyl gp. if necessary. A composition containing such a compound is biocidally active and has pesticidal, fungicidal and herbicidal properties.
