Abstract

1,202,826. Testing sealed joints of containers SWISS ALUMINIUM Ltd. March 19, 1969 [March 19, 1968], No.14515/69. Heading G1S A filled container 2 of thermoplastic foil or a laminate of metal and thermoplastic foils has its welded edges 3 held between a flat surface 5 of a base part 1, and ribs 11 of a part 10 of an upper frame 25, the measurement of the thickness of the edges at various peripheral points of the container being considered as indicative of the effectiveness or otherwise of the seal. The frame 25 may be lowered until the part 10 contacts the container and the ribs 11 flatten the edges 3 against the resistance of springs 14, 15, and plungers 16 are moved when the edges 3 are clamped so that the thickness of the edge joint may be measured at several circumferential positions, Fig.2, by a series of dial gauges 18. If all the dials show the same desired reading then the container edges are regarded as being perfectly sealed. The containers may be conveyed to the apparatus and moved testing into position by a vertically movable table 20, and imperfectly sealed containers may be automatically rejected and conveyed away or signalled by means responsive to the vertical displacement of the plungers connected by electric leads 21 to suitable apparatus.
