Abstract

1,202,801. Alkylating isoparaffins. UNIVERSAL OIL PRODUCTS CO. 23 Jan., 1968 [24 Jan., 1967], No. 3397/68. Heading C5E. A mixed alkylation feed 10 comprising isoparaffinic and olefinic hydrocarbons is introduced as a plurality (2 or more) of longitudinally spaced streams into elongated reaction zone 11, where they react in the presence of a liquid catalyst (particularly HF). Reaction zone 11 contains internal cooling means (not shown) supplied by cooling pipe 12 with exit 13, and the rate of passage of feed through each inlet port is adjusted so that the heat evolved in the reaction is dissipated by the cooling means prior to the reaction mixture reaching the next succeeding downstream inlet. Effluent 15 is separated in zone 16 to yield alkylate 17 and recycle catalyst 14 which, together with makeup catalyst 18 as desired, is pumped by 19 back to zone 11 without intermediate cooling. A pressure drop of at least 0À136 atmospheres is maintained across zone 11, and preferably also across separation zone 16. The process is particularly suitable for alkylating isobutane with butylenes, but isohexane as the isoparaffin, and olefins from propylene to heptene are also specifically mentioned. Alternative catalysts to HF are mixtures of sulphuric and phosphoric acids, mixtures of hydrochloric acid and certain complexes of AlCl 3 and BF 3 , or sulphuric acid alone.
