Abstract

1,202,046. Methyl methacrylate bead polymers. G.M.W. LABORATORIES Ltd. 3 Jan., 1968 [16 Jan., 1967], No. 49994/69. Divided out of 1,202,045. Heading C3P. Methyl methacrylate is polymerized in suspension in the presence of a refractory oxide to produce polymer beads suitable for use in the manufacture of abrasion-resistant artificial teeth. Refractory oxides specified are silica, zirconium oxide and calcined alumina. Polymerization is preferably effected in an aqueous medium which may contain a protective colloid such as gelatin, cellulose, sodium polymethacrylate or starch. If desired, a methyl mothacrylate monomer/polymer mixture can be used for the polymerization. Benzoyl peroxide is illustrated as a polymerization catalyst.
