A reversible proportional process controller comprises an arm responsive to a variable connected in an A.C. bridge circuit providing an output signal to a magnetic amplifier continuously controlling load current through a rectifier, and a means, responsive to the phase sense of the signal, controlling a reversing switch and hence the direction of the load current. A temperature sensitive resistor 1 connected in a bridge circuit 2 controls an amplifier 3 coupled through a rectifier 4 to the control winding of a magnetic amplifier 5 which varies current through a thermopile 8. The output of amplifier 3 is also coupled through a common emitter amplifier 9 to a phase sensing unit 10 which through relays 14, 15 energizes one of reversing contactors 16, 17. Identity of phase between the various parts of the circuit is ensured by feeding them from secondary windings on a common transformer 13 and dependent on whether the temperature sensor 1 is above or below a determined value, current of appropriate direction and magnitude is fed to the thermopile 8 to give cooling or heating respectively. It is stated in the Specification that the efficiency of the arrangement is higher than that of prior art arrangements having a corresponding function and the decrease of weight of the equipment is 50% or more.
