Abstract
120,166. Makin, E. March 22, 1918. Food for animals.-A foodstuff for human beings, animals or birds, is formed of wild or naturally-growing vegetable substances, such as heather, gorse, brambles, bracken, ferns, grasses, leaves, stems, stalks, roots, &c., to which is added spent hops or the derivatives described in Specifications 21909/01 and 14124/03. Other foodstuffs, such as juices expressed from mangels, swedes, turnips, &c., or flavouring liquids such as essential oils or essences and saccharine substances such as honey, molasses, sugar, glucose, &c., may be added. The mixture is reduced to a pulp and is partially digested either by boiling with an alkali or by leaving the pulped mass in heaps for some time. The mass is sterilized or cooked by superheated steam, hot air or direct heat, and may be formed into cakes in apparatus such as that described in Specification 5224/06. Specification 9835/95 is also referred to.
