Abstract

1,201,543. 543. Marking by irradiation. J.M. GILCHRIST. March 12, 1968 [March 13, 1967], No. 12033/68. Heading G2A. An article which is packed within an inner wrap and then an outer wrap (e.g. a carton of cigarettes) is marked (e.g. with a tax stamp) on the inner wrap by irradiation through a patterned plate or stencil. The outer wrap is transparent to the radiation, and is unaffected. If the radiation used is visible light, then the inner wrap is treated with a material responsive (e.g. by change of colour) to light energy. Other forms of irradiation may be used (e.g. ultraviolet or infrared light, heat, or ultrasonic energy), and the inner wrap is treated with a suitably responsive material. Fig. 1 shows an apparatus for carrying out the marking. The carton 9 is carried into position on a conveyer belt 14. On reaching the marking station, it trips controlling means for automatically pushing it up against the press plate 22 on which is patterned the required marking, and switching on the radiation source in the section 16 of the main housing 8, so that the carton is irradiated through the patterned plate 22. After a suitable exposure time, the carton is released and moved on. The housing 8 may be assembled with interchangeable sections devised to accommodate cartons of different shapes and sizes.
