1,201,148. Pneumatic tyre manufacture. DUNLOP CO. Ltd. 4 Dec., 1967 [3 Dec., 1966], No. 54229/66. Heading B7C. A method of making a pneumatic tyre comprising building a carcass of at least one ply and relatively rotating the crown and bead regions of the carcass about the axis of normal rotation of the tyre before or during the operation of shaping the carcass from a substantially cylindrical or low-crowned shape to a substantially fully-shaped form of the tyre of U- shaped cross-section so as to change the angular disposition of the cords of the carcass ply or plies. The relative rotation may be carried out on a building drum or in a tyre mould. In an example, a carcass is built on a tyre building drum having an inflatable shaping bag disposed about its central portion and two axially and independently rotatable end portions and is shaped thereon by inflation of the bag and movement of the end portions axially towards each other and rotationally with respect to the bag. The carcass may be shaped with breaker layers positioned thereon. Carcass plies having textile cords may be arranged to cross and overlap in the crown region of the tyre and, in addition, may be folded back to form an additional layer in the crown region.
