Abstract

1,200,927. Expansible cores. IMPERIAL METAL INDUSTRIES (KYNOCH) Ltd. 25 Sept., 1968 [9 Oct., 1967], No. 46121/67. Heading B5A. [Also in Division F3] In the moulding of a tube, one end whereof may be closed e.g. an igniter chamber for a solid rocket motor, a cylindrical blank, e.g. of seven layers of asbestos fibre/phenolic resin composite wherein 70% of the fibres are aligned in the circumferential direction, is moulded against the cylindrical cavity 9 of a mould 1 by a rubber mandrel 18 which is radially expanded by forcing into a mandrel cavity 22, of constantly tapering cross-section away from the open end thereof, a similarly tapered shaft 12 of larger cross-section than the cavity 22. In the moulding of an open ended tube, tapered shafts may be forced into tapered cavities extending from either end into the mandrel. The shaft 12, which may be greased, is forced into the mandrel 18, through a centrallizing ring 14, by pressure exerted by an upper press platen. Excess resin is forced out of a drainage hole 28, and air entrapped within the mandrel 18 escapes via a shaft bore 30. The mould 1 is then heated e.g. to 145-160‹ C. for 30 mins. to cure the resin by passing steam through a mould jacket 5, followed by cooling by water circulated therethrough. Release of the moulded blank from the mould may be facilitated by a parting agent applied to the blank external surface. The moulding incorporates an aluminium insert 26.
