A photographic roll film camera having a manually operated slide to activate a film rewinding mechanism and a second manually operated slide to unlock the camera back for loading and unloading the film, contains a locking device to prevent accidental rewinding of the film and accidental opening of the camera back by inadvertent operation of the slides. The device comprises a pivoting latching lever 2 biased by a spring 9 and having a lug 25 which, when the device is in the locked position, Fig.1, prevents operative movement of the film rewind activating slide 3 in the direction of the arrow. A cam surface 21 at the other end of latching lever 2 abuts a lug 11 mounted on the camera back unlocking slide 1, movement of this slide in the operative direction shown by the arrow being stopped at an intermediate position before the camera back is unlocked by the lug 11 abutting a stop 22. During said movement of slide 1, the lug 11 operates on cam surface 21 to pivot the latching lever 2 thus freeing the film rewind slide 3 from the lug 25. During the subsequent movement of the film rewind slide 3 to activate the film rewind, the lug 25 operates on cam surface 32 to further pivot the latching lever 2 thus freeing the camera back unlocking slide 1, the lug 25 engaging the nose 33 to retain the film rewind slide in the film rewind position. When the film has been rewound, operation of the camera back unlocking slide 1 to open the camera back further pivots the latch lever 2 when lug 11 operates on cam surface 23 and the lug 25 is disengaged from nose 33 allowing the film rewind slide 3 and subsequently the latching lever 2 to return to their original positions.
