Abstract
1,199,886. Cleaning swimming pools. R. R. MYERS. 14 April, 1969, No. 19060/69. Heading A4F. A machine for cleaning a swimming pool comprises a cleaning device mounted on a frame having two drive wheels both normally driven forwardly by a prime mover via two transmission units one associated with each wheel and each coupled to a sensing member, but when a sensing member engages an obstacle the associated transmission unit is actuated to reverse the motion of the drive wheel, coupled thereto thereby changing the direction of movement of the machine. The illustrated machine comprises an electric motor 30 driving a pump 36 and a rotary chopper 32 for pulverizing debris drawn by the pump 36 through inlets 40 and 103 and passed to a filter bag 20. The inlet 40 and 103 and passed to a filter bag 20. The inlet 40 is connected by a conduit 22 (Fig. 1, not shown) to a floating unit for cleaning the surface of the pool. The motor 30 also drives via worm gearing 54, 56 a shaft 58 carrying wheels 64, 66 for driving tread belts 122 for propelling the machine over the floor of the pool. The drive is transmitted from the shaft 58 to each wheel via planetary gears 70 (Fig. 12, not shown) which are prevented from rotation during forward movement of the machine. When however either of two sensing elements 94 carried by rods 98 strike an obstacle to the forward movement of the machine mechanism is actuated by a rod 98 to free the planetary gears driving one of the wheels 64, 66, whereby that wheel is rotated in the reverse direction to turn the machine away from the obstacle.
