Abstract

1,199,090. Cross-linked starch. PENICK & FORD Ltd. 29 Nov., 1968, No. 56704/68. Heading C3U. Starch in the form of cold-water insoluble, native, ungelatinized granules is cross-linked with either divinyl sulphone or an urea-formaldehyde resin under non-swelling conditions of temperature and alkalinity until it is sufficiently insolubilized to settle out after soaking at 5% concentration for 30 min. at 75‹ F. in 1% by wt. aq. NaOH, and the insolubilized product is etherified in a water suspension without swelling it to an unfilterable state with a monofunctional reagent to an ether group D.S. of at least 0À2 and is recovered by filtration. Optionally the product may be gelatinized by heating either in aqueous alkali of 0À1-4À0% by wt. concentration if divinyl sulphone was the cross-linking agent, or in aqueous acid at a pH below 5À0 when an U-F resin was used. Gelatinization is believed to break the cross-links. In examples the etherifying agents are: ethylene or propylene oxide, 1,2-epoxybutane, sodium monochloracetate, acrylonitrile, allyl chloride and methyl chloride.
