A machine for folding the edge 26 of a flexible workpiece 15, e.g. a footwear insole, comprises a work-table 14 provided with an abutment 25 rising therefrom to define a curved surface against which the workpiece is pressed to start the folding over of the edge 26, a presser foot 16 for pressing the workpiece 15 against the abutment 25, and a reciprocable member 27 which engages, during every cycle, the edge 26, which has already been partially folded against the abutment 25, to complete the folding, the member 27 being actuated by a motor of the machine and having its direction of reciprocal motion substantially perpendicular to the direction of advance of the workpiece 15 along the table 14. As shown, the workpiece comprises a thin layer 15 the edge 26 of which is to be folded over a thicker layer 45. A header 13 overhangs the table 14 and carries the presser foot 16 affixed to a lever 17 pivoted at 18 and carrying a pivot 19 housed in a slot 20 in one arm of a pivoted lever 21 the other arm of which is vertically slidable in a fixed slot to engage and disengage the foot 16. The member or bar 27 is provided, at one end, with a radiused tip and is pivoted, at the other end, at 28 to a vertical rod 29 and is maintained horizontal by a spring 30 fixed to a tensioning device 39 secured to the rod 29 by a set screw 31 which also connects a bar 32 to the rod 29. The bar 32 is urged to the right of Fig. 2 by a spring 34 and carries a block 35 formed of two parts 40, 41 connected by a set screw 42 whose head is slidable in a groove 43 in a cover plate 44. The part 41 carries a bearing 36 which is urged, by the spring 34, against a cam 37 keyed to the mainshaft 38 of the machine. The rod 27 rests against a rocker arm 47 pivoted at 48 and carrying a tooth 49 adapted to engage a tooth 50 on a clamp 51 vertically pivotable in a plane perpendicular to that in which the arm 47 oscillates. In operation, the cam 37 moves the rod 32 and thus the bar 27 engages and folds the partially folded edge 26. When the bar 27 reaches the extreme right (as viewed in Fig. 2) of its movement, the clamp 51 is rotated so that the tooth 50 engages the tooth 49 to rotate the arm 47 and urge the bar 27 upwardly against the action of the spring 30. Thus, the return stroke of the bar 27 takes place without the bar sliding on the already folded edge 26. As the bar reaches the extreme left, the clamp 51 disengages the arm 47 so that the spring 30 lowers the bar 27 and a hammer (not shown) advances the workpiece.
