1,198,687. Packaging machines. S. OMORI. 10 Nov., 1967 [11 Nov., 1966(4); 26 July, 1967(2)], No. 51163/67. Heading B8C. A sausage type package formed by tubing a plastics &c. web about a contents feed nozzle and sealing and severing the tube at package lengths, has a tear cord or strip sealed partway along the package length at the same time as the sealing of the tube seam and, in the examples shown, on the opposite side to it. The free portion assists gripping and may occur at the centre of the package length or adjacent the ends. It may be tack welded midway of its ends to prevent it looping up or incised to asist breaking. The strip 28 is shown as free centrally at 43 and tack welded at 42 in Fig. 5F. Apparatus for forming the package includes a hopper with a stirrer and an extruder at the hopper exit connected to the feed nozzle 11. The extruder, Fig. 2 (not shown), comprises a cylindrical valve member rotating in a cylinder attached at its side wall to the hopper exit and the valve member having apertures coinciding alternately with the hopper outlet and the exit to the nozzle. A piston reciprocates within the valve to extrude the material. A web 25 is tubed in the usual way around the nozzle and the tear strip 28 is positioned to lie on the opposite side to the overlap. Electrodes 29, 32 on reciprocating jaws 30, 36 simultaneously form the seam and attach the strip by pressing against the nozzle 11 while the web is stationary. The lower electrode 32 may not extend along the nozzle as far as the upper does, either upstream, downstream or both, to to produce free strip portions at one or both ends Alternatively the electrode 32 may be recessed to produce a free central portion. An additional electrode or a knife mounted on the jaw 30 may tack weld or incise the free portion. Known means attaches securing clips to the ends and severs packages from the tube.
