Abstract

1,198,219. Pentachlorophenol. MONSANTO CO. 23 Dec., 1968 [28 Dec., 1967], No. 61079/68. Heading C2C. Pentachlorophenol is made by treating phenol or a lower chlorophenol with elementary chlorine in the presence of metallic aluminium (or aluminium chloride) and metallic copper. Examples are given. The colour of the product may be improved by a brief treatment with steam or by addition of a small proportion of an alkanol of 1-10 carbon atoms.
