The invention comprises dyes of formula wherein Y is phenyl (optionally substituted by halogen, CN, lower-alkyl, lower-alkoxy, NO 2 , halo-lower-alkanoylamino or halo-lower-alkenoylamino), naphthyl, loweralkyl, benzyl (optionally ring-substituted by Cl, lower-alkyl, loweralkoxy or NO 2 ), C-phenyl-hydroxy-lower-alkyl, phenylsulphonyl, halophenylsulphonyl, lower alkylphenylsulphonyl, lower - alkoxypheny sulphonyl, nitrophenylsulphonyl, naphthylsulphonyl or lower-alkylsulphonyl; X is H, halogen, NO 2 or lower-alkyl; Ar is phenyl (optionally substituted by halogen, NO 2 , loweralkyl, CF 3 , lower-alkoxy, phenoxy, loweralkylphenoxy, lower - alkylsulphonyl, sulphamoyl, N - lower - alkylsulphamoyl or N,N - di - lower - alkylsulphamoyl) or naphthyl; M<SP>+</SP> is one equivalent of a cation; and n is 1 or 2; wherein rings A and B may be substituted by halogen, NO 2 , lower-alkyl, phenylsulphonyl, lower - alkylsulphonyl, sulphamoyl, N - lower - alkylsulphamoyl or N,N - di - lower - alkylsulphamoyl, and wherein the group -N=N-Ar is linked to ring A or B or both para to the metal-binding oxygen atom. The term " lower " denotes a carbon content of up to five atoms. These dyes are prepared by reacting, in any sequence, an appropriate o - (hydroxy or alkoxy) - o<SP>1</SP>- hydroxy azo dye, an appropriate o-hydroxyo<SP>1</SP>-hydroxy azomethine dye and an agent capable of yielding chromium. The azomethine dye may be prepared in situ by condensing an appropriate o-hydroxybenzaldehyde with an appropriate o-hydroxyaniline. Intermediate 1 : 1 chromium complexes of the azo dye starting materials may be isolated. The dyes of the invention may be used to imbue polyamide-containing materials with red to orange shades. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 887,461.
