Abstract

1,197,086. Overcharge protection for batteries. CATYLATORS Ltd. 13 May, 1968 [18 July, 1967], No. 33033/67. Heading H2H. A battery charging circuit comprises a temperature sensitive bridge having two fixed ratio arms, a third arm having a first thermistor T1 and an arm including a second thermistor T2 and a resistor R3, the thermistors being influenced by the temperature of a battery, one diagonal of the bridge circuit being connected to a source of constant D.C. current and the other diagonal to a means through which the battery is charged. Thermistor T1 has a higher resistance than that of thermistor T2 at the same temperature, and T1 may be exposed to hydrogen gas evolved from the battery. The thermistors will be equally effected by ambient temperature hence providing compensation for this effect. After connection of a supply and a battery to the circuit thermistor T1 will heat up more than thermistor T2 hence its resistance will fall more than that of the latter, thus the bridge circuit passes to an out-of-balance condition giving an output of the polarity indicated hence charging the battery. Hydrogen evolved from the battery on the gassing will cool the thermistor T1 returning the bridge towards a condition of balance which reduces the charging current. In low temperature ambient conditions the resistances of thermistors T1, T2 will be too high hence Zener diodes Z1 Z2 provide a bypass so the output voltage at terminals 2 temporarily reverses in sign until the resistance of thermistor T1 falls. If the battery temperature should become sufficiently high the output from the bridge will be zero. Terminals 2 are connected to a device controlling charging current.
