Abstract

1,196,747. Securing knobs on spindles. PLESSEY CO. Ltd. 31 May, 1968 [5 June, 1967], No. 25908/67. Heading F2U. A hollow, moulded plastics, control knob in rotary drive connection with a spindle end 5 is axially retained thereon by a metallic retaining member 3 which is moulded into the periphery of the knob blind bore 2 and snaps into a spindle groove 4. Where the knob is of hard plastics (e.g. polysulphone) the member 3 may be a circlip as shown, or where the knob is of soft flexible plastics (e.g. acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) the member may be triangular (Fig. 2, not shown) the triangle corners being deeply embedded in the knob. The rotary drive connection may be a diametral web formed in knob and engaging a slot 7 in the spindle end as shown. Alternatively, to eliminate backlash, the slot 7 may be engaged by a spring metal (e.g. beryllium copper) member embedded in the base of the knob bore, such member comprising a U-shaped member (Fig. 3a, not shown) having its legs so splayed as to engage opposite sides of the slot, an M-shaped member (Fig. 3b, not shown) having its legs and centre protrusion respectively engaging said opposite sides, or a wavy strip (Fig. 3c, not shown). In a further embodiment, the slot 7 is engaged by one or two balls trapped in tapered grooves axially extending in the knob bore. In Figs. 4, 5 (not shown) a D-shaped hardened steel clip 14 is moulded in the knob bore such that its straight side engages a flat on the spindle.
