Abstract
119,659. Busvold, N. Oct. 3, 1917, [Convention date]. Arsenic sulphide; bismuth chloride, fluoride, oxychloride, sulphide, and other salts.-Bismuth salts are separated from impurities commonly associated with bismuth in bismuth ores, the associated metals being precipitated as sulphide while the bismuth is obtained in solution and may be recovered in the metallic form by precipitation with zinc, by reduction of the oxychloride, or by electro deposition. A bismuth ore may be dissolved in hydrochloric acid and the metals completely precipitated by sulphuretted hydrogen, the precipitate being then treated with a further quantity of the crude solution which produces a pure solution of bismuth chloride, leaving the arsenic &c. as sulphide. When a bismuth sulphide ore is treated with an acid (hydrochloric, hydrofluoric, or other acid) the evolved sulphurettd hydrogen may be used to effect the precipitation of the crude sulphide. The sulphide ore may be completely dissolved in acid, the solution being then treated with more of the ore or with another sulphide. Arsenic sulphide will then be first precipitated. Or a quantity of bismuth sulphide ore may be treated with less than enough acid to dissolve it, when a bismuth salt is obtained leaving arsenic sulphide undissolved.
