Abstract

[Also in Divisions B1-B2] Polyhydantoin plastics are prepared by reacting an optionally masked polyisocyanate or polyisothiocyanate and a polyglycine ester derivative of the formula wherein R is an n-valent aliphatic, alkoxyaliphatic, alkylthioaliphatic, cycloaliphatic, aromatic or araliphatic radical, each group R 1 , which may be the same or different in the compound of Formula (I), represents hydrogen or an optionally substituted alkyl radical, R 2 represents a hydroxyl, amino, alkylamino, dialkylamino, alkoxy or aryloxy group, B 3 represents hydrogen or an alkyl, aralkyl or aryl radical and n is 2, 3 or 4, in a first reaction stage at 0‹ to 500‹ C. in such molar quantities that a 1 to 50% molar deficiency of one component is present, and the resulting preadduct solution is reacted in a second stage with an additional amount of the deficient component, or of another compound having similar reactivity, at a temperature of 80‹ to 500‹ C. If desired, the preadduct may be isolated and redissolved before the second reaction stage is carried out. Where the preadduct has a deficiency of glycine ester derivative it may be further reacted with a solution of a compound containing at least two Zerewitinoff-active hydrogen atoms per molecule, e.g. di- or poly-alcohols or amines. A preadduct having an isocyanate deficiency may be reacted with a preadduct having a glycine derivative deficiency. Preferred solvents include phenol, xylene, cresol and toluene. The polyhydantoin may be isolated by removing the solvent or the solution may be used as a lacquer. In a typical example a preadduct having an isocyanate deficiency is prepared by heating N,N<SP>1</SP>-bis-(carboxymethyl) - dimethyl - methane - 4,4<SP>1</SP>- diamino diaminodiphenyl methane with 4,4<SP>1</SP>- diisocyanato-diphenylmethane in a cresol/xylene solvent mixture and the preadduct is further reacted with 4,4<SP>1</SP>-diisocyanato"diphenylmethane. The lacquer solutions may be used to coat copper wire (see Division B2).
