Abstract

1,195,815. Descaling flux. Descaling metals. KOLENE CORP. Jan.20, 1969 [Jan. 22, 1968], No.3055/69. Headings C7E and C7M. A material for use in a salt bath for descaling metal comprises a uniform solid solution of an alkali metal hydroxide, a nitrate salt and water of hydration which is formed by fision of the mixed constituents and cooling to solidify the material. The solid solution preferably consists of 5-30% KNO 3 , 5-20% H 2 O and 60-90% KOH and the fused mixture is preferably rapidly cooled to form a flake product. It may be used as the starting material for a fused salt bath or as an addition to an aqueous solution of an alkali metal hydroxide and a nitrate salt to regenerate the salt bath. The salt baths formed from the solid solution are especially useful in treating the scale of Ti and stainless steels prior to descaling with acids.
