To ensure long service life and silent operation of a reinforced rubber or plastics toothed belt 1 engageable with toothed driving and driven gear-wheels 2, 3 respectively, the tooth pitch of the driving gear-wheel 2 is larger than that of the driven gear-wheel 3 but smaller than the tooth pitch of the belt 1, the difference in the tooth pitches corresponding to the elastic deformation of the belt teeth occurring due to the tensile load transmitted by the belt. To ensure correct synchronization of the toothed belt drive, the gaps between the teeth of the driving and driven gear-wheels 2, 3 in the circumferential direction are wider than the width of the belt teeth la in the circumferential direction of the toothed belt by at least the difference in the tooth pitches multiplied by the number of engaging belt teeth. The toothed belt 1 may be of polyurethane with reinforcing members (not shown) embedded therein in the form of helically coiled steel wires continuous in a longitudinal direction, the teeth 1a being moulded or machined of trapezoidal cross-section on the inner belt surface. The teeth 2a, 3a on the driving and driven gear-wheels 2, 3 are of similar cross-section and have involute-shape arcuate flank faces.
