An insulated conductor bar in a slotted core member of an electrical machine comprises two superimposed layers of resistive material surrounding the insulation of the bar, the inner layer having a higher surface resistivity than the outer layer, the latter being made of mechanically strong, flexible material so as to serve as a protective layer for the inner layer and the insulation and to bridge any gaps between the inner layer and the sides of the slot and thus prevent glow discharges. The inner layer is secured to the insulation by a hot pressing process and to prevent glow discharge at the ends of a slot, the length of the inner layer is greater than that of the outer layer, whose length equals that of the slot. The inner layer may be a resistive varnish coating or a flexible carrier impregnated with a resistive mixture and the outer layer comprises a glass-silk and asbestos carrier impregnated with a resistive mixture.
