Abstract
1,194,205. Calenders for paper. BELOIT CORP. 30 June, 1967 [15 Aug., 1966], No. 30356/67. Heading D2A. The vibration of a calender roll (11) is damped by making the roll as a shell (12) journalled for rotation about a stationary shaft (15) and providing two diametrically opposed pressure means on the shat to engage the inside of the shell, fluid-pressure means to load the pressure means, and at least one flow-restriction orifice connected with the fluidpressure means. As shown, shoes 19 bear on the inner wall 13 of the shell, and grooves 27 are formed in the surface of the shaft 15. These grooves are closed at their ends, and rectangular pistons 32 can slide in the grooves. Passageways 39 admit fluid under pressure to the grooves 27 and so press the shoes 19 outwards. A valve passageway 48 in the shaft 15 communicates with the grooves 27 by orifices 49, and a valve piston 50 sliding in the passageway 48 can cut off some or all of these orifices. When the roll is subjected to vibration, the vibration is damped by the passage of fluid through these orifices, the amount of damping can be varied by controlling the number of orifices available by moving the valve piston 50.
