A tumbler dryer comprises a cabinet having a rear panel to which are attached front, top, bottom and side panels, the whole being supportable off the ground by means of the rear panel. The rear panel 14 has two slots 128, each of which can be brought into engagement with a hook 126 on a bracket 125 secured to a wall 15, so that the tumbler-dryer can be hung on the wall 15, preferably supported also by a bracket 130, which is secured to the wall so as to engage the base of the cabinet. The base of the cabinet may also be provided with feet or castors, so that, alternatively, the tumbler-dryer may stand and/or be moved on a floor. Within the cabinet are mounted: a horizontal rotary drying drum 23 provided with internal fixed baffles 76, a coaxial rotary airimpeller 80 (located in a housing 45) for creating a current of air, a lint filter 81 and an electric coil element 124 (within a shroud 60) for heating the air before it reaches the drum 23. The front endwall of the drying drum has a central opening for fabrics surrounded by a perforated annular part 71 for admitting heated air. The drum has a rear endwall provided with a rearwardly extending, central, cylindrical perforated portion 75 for exit of the current of air into the housing 45 and thence to a vent 51. An opening 21, which can be closed by a door 25, is provided in the front panel 20 of the cabinet. An electric motor 110 drives separately and simultaneously, as by belt and pulley drives at each end of the motor, the drum 23 and the impeller 80. A manually actuable timing dial 23 is provided at the upper part 20 of the front panel 18 for controlling the dryer mechanisms and the heating coil element 124. For example, when the motor 110 attains a predetermined speed, the heater 124 is switched on, and the motor may then be controlled to rotate the impeller 80 at 1700 r.p.m. and the container 23 at 52 r.p.m. Attached to the forward side of the panel 14 is a scroll-shaped member 54, Figs. 1 and 2, which forms part of the housing 45 of the blower. The housing 45 has an opening 55, which is encircled by a forwardly extending flange 56, to the lower, inner portion of which a strip of felt 58 coated with tetrafluoroethylene is adhered to form a bearing for the portion 75 of the drum 23. A flange 73, Figs. 2 and 5, surrounding the opening at the front end of the drum supports the latter on similar bearings comprising: a strip of felt 64 coated with tetrafluoroethylene adhered to the arcuate flange 59 of a bracket secured, as by screws 61, to the shroud 60, itself secured to the upper portion 20 of the front panel 18, The impeller 80 is rotatably mounted on an axial, rearwardly projecting shaft 79 secured to the rear endwall 68 of the drum 23, to which endwall is also secured a forwardly projecting hub 90, which is in alignment with the shaft 79 and frictionally engages within the hollow hub of the housing 103 of the lint filter 81, which is thus rotated with the drum.
