1,193,898. Toothed gearing. GEWERKSCHAFT EISENHœTTE WESTFALIA. 3 Oct., 1968 [3 Oct., 1967], No. 47002/68. Heading F2Q. In a worm gearing comprising a globoidal worm 3 and globoidal worm-wheel 1, the wormwheel 1 is of steel hardened and ground on the surfaces of its teeth 2 which co-operate with the worm 3 which is produced from a softer material than the wheel 1 such that any manufacturing variations in tooth pitch &c. between the worm and wheel are accommodated by the softer teeth on the worm adjusting its form (i.e. wearing away during running in) to the form of the harder teeth 2 on the wheel 1. The worm 3 may be of unhardened steel, bronze, cast iron or aluminium or may be of steel, hardened to a lesser degree than the wheel 1. The grinding of the tooth flanks of the wheel 1 may be effected by a cylindrical hobbing worm of equal size and pitch, the grinding worm being coated with an abrasive composition and trued according to the pitch and form of the worm-wheel teeth, which teeth may be of involute form or of trapezoidal cross-section. A hardened and ground globoidal worm-wheel may alternatively be used with a soft cylindrical worm, the worm in operation assuming a form approximating to that of a globoidal worm.
