Abstract
119,376. Burdons, Ltd., Burdon, W. M., and Burdon, M. M. Jan. 18, 1918. Liquid-fuel furnaces. - The air supply to a burner of special construetion passes through a pipe j, Fig. 1, arranged in a heating- chamber at the top of the furnace and provided with spiral retarding - devices k and thence to a tapering nozzle 2 provided with spiral 1 for giving the air a gyratory motion. The air is agitated by a small fan 4 mounted freely in front of the nozzle 2, and passes through and round a carburettor 6 to which oil is supplied through an inclined nozzle 8. The oil-supply tank c may be heated by air supplied from the tube j through a branch j<2>, and the oil nozzle may be cleaned by a sliding-needle 8a held in its retracted position by a spring. The air-heating pipe may be formed of two branches 19, 20, Fig. 8, of oval crosssection arranged in parallel and with connecting pipes j<11>, passages j<12> being left between the branches for the combustion gases. A telescopic joint 21 packed with asbestos or other packing allows the pipe j to expand. In a second form. the air-supply pipes 24, Fig. 11, to the burners i pass through heating-chambers at the sides of a fire-brick heater which is heated by another burner, the air supply pipe 28 of which passes through a chamber 29 at the top of the heater, all the air supply pipes being connected to a common air box 23. The gases from the combustion chamber pass into the lateral heating- chambers, and through a flue 32 into the top chamber 29 from which they escape through a flue 33 controlled by a damper. When desired, the hot air to the burners i may be shut off and cold air is then supplied through branches 24<b>. Specification 1766/13, [Class 75 (i), Burners &c.], is referred to.
