Abstract

119,365. British Thomson - Houston Co., (General Electric Co.). Jan. 2, 1918. Wireless signalling.-In a wireless receiving system employing an electron discharge amplifier having resonant grid and plate circuits, means are provided for preventing the generation, at all frequencies, of oscillations due to the electrostatic and electro-magnetic couplings between the grid and plate circuits. In a modification employing several amplifiers connected in cascade, the inductances of the tuned grid and plate circuits are placed in metal boxes to prevent electro-magnetic coupling between certain of the circuits. To prevent electro-magnetic coupling of the resonant grid and plate circuits, the inductances 4 and 6, Fig. 1, of the circuits are enclosed in metal boxes 8 and 9, or these inductances are provided with closed iron cores. To compensate for the electrostatic coupling between the grid 10 and plate 11, a counter electromotive force is impressed upon the grid 10 through a condenser 13. The cathode 14 is connected also to the middle point 15 of the inductance 4, the grid 10 to one end of this inductance, and the condenser 13 to the other end of this inductance. To prevent oscillations due to the capacity coupling between the inductances 4 and 6 t.he battery 18 is connected to an intermediate point 19 of the inductance 6 instead of to one end of this inductance. To prevent the production of oscillations due to the gradation in potential between the ends of the inductance 4 a variable condenser 20 is employed to balance the natural capacity of the antenna and the ground connexion made to the central point 22 of the coil 3. In the modification shown in Fig. 2, in which three amplifiers 23, 24 and 25 connected in cascade are employed, electro-magnetic coupling between the grid and plate circuits of the several amplifiers is prevented by enclosing the inductances in metal boxes, and connexions are made to intermediate points of the inductances as in the arrangement shown in Fig. 1.
